Bharathanatyam Competition

The annual Bharathanatyam competition at the Cleveland Thyagaraja Festival is held on the second weekend of the Festival.

Dancers from across the globe convene in Cleveland for this prestigious competition, hoping to win the top prize in their category.

New Competition Format for 2012

The 2012 competition will be held over 2 days, April 14–15. All applicants will perform in a preliminary round on Saturday, April 14. They will perform a preselected item with a strict time limit of 6 minutes before a panel of judges.

Five (5) finalists from each category will be selected by the judges to perform on Sunday, April 15 during the grand finale. Each finalist will be given 12 minutes to perform a preselected item. Judges will select the winners from each category and the Grand Prize winner at the completion of the program.

Prizes

The competition will be divided into three age categories.

The winner in the 12–14 category will receive a 1-hour performance slot at the 2013 Cleveland festival.

The winners of the 15–18 and 19–25 categories will receive a performance opportunity in Chennai during the 2012 music and dance season, under the Aradhana Committee banner.

In addition, a single GRAND PRIZE winner will be selected from across all categories. This Grand Prize winner will receive:

  • A performance at Sri Krishna Gana Sabha in Chennai, during their 2012 season
  • A cash prize of $1,500 towards travel and performance costs
