Contemporary Composer Krithi Competition

This prizes for this category were endowed in honor of A. Venketraman, to promote the growth and propagation of more recent compositions in the Carnatic repertoire.

Please read these rules carefully before registering for the competition.

Eligibility

  • The competition is an individual event. Groups will not be allowed to enter.
  • You must be in the age range of 10–21 (as of March 1) to compete.
  • This category is open to vocal and melody instruments. Competitors will not be separated into vocal and instrumental categories, and only one set of prizes will be given out.

Application/Competition

  • The competition is restricted to the compositions of composers and musicians who were active in the 20th century, such as G.N. Balasubramaniam, M.D. Ramanathan, Tanjore S. Kalyanaraman, N. Ravikiran, Neyveli Santhanagopalan, etc.
  • All applicants must submit three (3) choices.
  • The judges will choose which of the krithis must be performed on stage. If the contestant is unable to perform the song that the judges have selected, he/she may be disqualified.
  • The contestant will be asked to perform ONE krithi, with NO raga alapana, niraval or kalpana swaram. A strict time limit of five (5) minutes will be imposed. A buzzer will signal the conclusion of the allotted time. The judges may also request the contestant to stop before the allotted time.
  • The decision of the judges is final and binding.
  • The application for registration and associated entry fee must be received by the deadline, March 19, 2023.
